Health Education and Wellness Programs

An integral department within the Division of Student Life, the Health Education and Wellness Program specializes in educational and outreach initiatives to create an awareness of healthy lifestyle choices and to promote overall wellbeing and academic success of Simmons students. The mission of the Health Education and Wellness Programs is to create a health-conscious culture within the Simmons community through awareness events, utilization of digital and social media, peer education groups, health campaigns, and residence life programming. This work is accomplished through active collaboration with students, faculty, and staff from across the campus including members of the Well @ Simmons consortium.

Health education topics include, but are not limited to, stress management, fitness, healthy eating, eating disorders and disordered eating, drug and alcohol use, self-esteem, safe sex, healthy relationships, and the prevention of relationship violence.

Wellness Ambassadors and Volunteers

Wellness Ambassadors and Volunteers are a dynamic and diverse group of students who are passionate about personal health and the health and wellness of others in their community. These students receive credible training by experts on topics such as fitness, nutrition, alcohol and drugs, sexual health, healthy relationships, eating disorders, body image, stress management, common viral and bacterial infections, HIV/AIDS, and sleep. The Wellness Ambassadors and Volunteers serve as an open-minded and non-judgmental resource team on campus for accurate health and wellness information delivery through educational programming, awareness events, and outreach initiatives. They promote the mission of Health Education and Wellness Programs and advocate for a health-conscious culture within the Simmons community.

Weekly Wellness Ambassador Meetings are held every Wednesday from 3:30pm until 4:30pm and are open to all Simmons students who wish to participate.

Betsy's Friends

Betsy's Friends is a unique peer education program at Simmons designed to educate students about relationship violence. Students are trained by experts on a variety of topics related to violence and sexual assault who in turn educate their peers through programming in the residence halls and events such as The Clothesline Project and Take Back the Night. Some of the topics discussed in this group include effective partner communication strategies, setting boundaries in relationships, relationship violence: the facts, and LGBT: woman-to-woman violence.

The Clothesline Project

Simmons College became a part of the national network, The Clothesline Project, in 1993. The Clothesline Project is a visual display which bears witness to domestic violence and sexual assault. It is comprised of a series of color-coded shirts hung on a clothesline. Each shirt is decorated to represent an individual's experience of rape, incest, battery, or homophobia; or as a tribute to someone who has been murdered. The shirts are decorated by the survivor's themselves or by their loved ones. At Simmons, The Clothesline Project provides women with a platform to courageously break the silence that often surrounds their experiences and celebrates their strength to survive.

Fit at Simmons

Fit at Simmons is a student-led peer education group that encourages Simmons student's to adopt fitness into their lives early-on through participation in a variety of activities and events offered throughout the academic year. These events are designed to accommodate students of all fitness abilities, particularly those, who may struggle with trying to find a way to fit regular exercise into their lives.

Fit Weekly Events

The goal of Fit at Simmons is to provide students the opportunity to actively engage in and try a unique fitness-based activity each week. Weekly activities typically run for 45 — 60 minutes and are held every Tuesday from 7- 8pm at the Sports Holmes Center on the Residence Campus. Some of the exciting activities planned for the semester include a spin class, zumba, pilates, insanity workout and more. Events are free and individuals of all fitness abilities are encouraged to participate. First weekly event starts September 10, 2013.

Find Your Own Fit Group Training Session

Find Your Own Fit group training sessions provide a total body workout, including cardiovascular exercise, general strength training and conditioning. The weekly sessions are taught by a certified personal trainer and utilize a variety of facilities and equipment available at the Simmons Holmes Sports Center, including the cardio room, weight room, resistance bands, medicine balls and more. Sessions are customized to accommodate students of all fitness abilities — beginner, intermediate and advanced. Classes are active, so be prepared to sweat! All classes are drop-in and free, so students can join at any time!

Yoga Club

Namaste! Yoga club is one of the most popular Fit at Simmons clubs! Yoga club meets two to three times weekly at the Sports Center on the residence campus and is led by Simmons student and long-time yoga practitioner Khaladie Darcy. Yoga mats are available on a first come first serve basis.

Bike at Simmons

The Bike at Simmons club meets for periodic weekend rides during the Fall semester. The club is appropriate for bikers of all levels and is designed to help students acclimate to biking in the city. In the past, Bike at Simmons club has participated in Hub on Wheels, an annual event hosted by the City of Boston that celebrates biking in the city, rides around the Charles River Esplanade, and fun trips with rest stops at a local bakery and an ice cream shop! Events are BYOB (Bring Your Own Bike) and helmets are required.

Nutritional Counseling and Education

Simmons students are eligible for free Nutrition Counseling & Education provided by Registered Dietitian, Liz Fayram.

Individual counseling is offered in the areas of:

  • Healthy Eating
  • Weight Management
  • Eating Issues and Concerns
  • Meal Planning
  • Nutrition for Special Conditions and Styles of Eating
  • Personalized Eating Plan
  • Athletics and Nutrition
  • Understanding Nutrition

The first appointment includes an intake about past and current food habits, medical history and a discussion of personal nutrition goals. Each subsequent session is tailored to the student's needs, as Liz believes that collaboration with her clients is essential.

Appointments are available every Wednesday from 12:30 — 5:30pm and every Thursday from 10-5 pm. Appointments can be made over the phone at 617-521-1002 or in person at the health center on the residence campus.

Student Health 101 digital magazine

Student Health 101 is a monthly online health and wellness magazine available to Simmons students for free. The current issue of the magazine is always available at Student Health 101 contains valuable health information that can be accessed at any time and on any electronic device including your smart phone, tablet or laptop. The content of the magazine is reviewed by health professionals and include articles and videos on topics such as body image, eating well and working out, sleep habits, healthy relationships, money management, and more.

Internship and Service Learning Opportunities

Internships and service learning opportunities are available to undergraduate and graduate students within the Department of Health Education and Wellness Programs in collaboration with and approval by academic departments.
